A Newcomer's Guide to Settling in Canada

Guide · Maple Compass

Arriving in Canada is exciting, but the first month comes with a stack of practical tasks. Tackling them in a sensible order saves time and stress.

1. Sort your key documents

Keep your passport, immigration documents (PR card, work or study permit), and any reference letters together. You will be asked for them repeatedly in the first weeks, so a single folder — physical and scanned — is worth the effort.

2. Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

You cannot work or open most financial products without a SIN. It is free and can be requested online or at a Service Canada centre. Apply within the first few days.

3. Open a bank account

Most major banks offer newcomer packages with no monthly fee for the first year. Bring your ID and proof of address. A local debit card and account make rent, bills, and payroll far easier.

4. Find housing and set up utilities

Short-term rentals buy you time to learn neighbourhoods before signing a year lease. Once settled, set up electricity, internet, and tenant insurance — the last is inexpensive and often required by landlords.

5. Register for health coverage

Provincial health plans are separate from the federal system, and several provinces have a waiting period of up to three months. Apply immediately and consider private interim coverage for the gap.

Work through the list in order and the rest — a phone plan, a transit card, a family doctor — falls into place naturally.
